Nov 9 - Johnson City, TN Newcomers Book Club discussion of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen - Nov 5 - Rose was a co-presenter/speaker at the Lost State Writers Guild in Kingsport, TN. She presented a summary of manuscript editing she learned at workshops she attended this year . At the Tennessee Mountain Writers workshop in Oak Ridge, TN she learned valuable editing skills from Chris Roerden and read Ms. Roerden's book "Don't Sabotage Your Submission". Rose also learned editing tips at the SW Virginia Writers Symposium in Richlands, VA where she attended the workshop by Kevin Quirk professional editor with A Writer's Eye. Nada Kirby presented a discussion on dialogue.
Nov 04 - Rose was disappointed that the discussion of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen was postponed due to illness of the hostess, Sharron Johnson. Rose felt this is an amazing book by an amazing man who seemingly stumbles through life, but becomes a real life hero. He is instrumental in raising funds for schools for Pakistan girls. She discovered  the author has a new book which may prove to be just as interesting a way to learn of another culture far removed from ours.
The Write Time! Newsletter was born. November was the first issue sent to area writer's in the Tri-Cities area of Northeast Tennessee and surrounding locations. If you want to sign up for the newsletter visit the Write Time! page on this website.
Oct 23 - Rose attended the South Carolina Writers Workshop in Myrtle Beach, SC, met with agents and editors for a Pitch Session, Slush Fest, and critique of the first ten pages of her novel "Green City". This was very encouraging. I feel I can continue with my writing, because there is interest for my novel's premise.
Oct 12 - Johnson City Newcomers Book Club was hosted by Jo Anne Jones who discussed Guerilla Daughter by Virginia Hansen. This is an amazing true story of survival in the Phillipines during World War II. The author writes of her memories as a young girl. She adds historical information. Rose's personal opinion of the book is that it could be written smoother to integrate the personal experiences with the historical events. She also felt that the mother took unnecessary risks with her family's lives when they could have been shipped to safety. It still is an astounding story with many surprises of how the human spirit endures even when faced with overwhelming odds.
Oct 3 - Memphis, TN - Rose attended the 51st Annual Mid-South Poetry Festival sponsored by the Poetry Society of Tennessee (PST) I was honored to win third place and honorable mentions for my poetry. The quality of the competition is keen.  Grandmother Earth national writing contest winners and accepted writings were also announced. Rose will be one of the featured poets in this year's Grandmother Earth publication for two haiku.

Sep 14 - Johnson City Newcomers Book Club hostess, Sydney Martin, led the discussion of The Reader by Bernhard Schlinik. Rose enjoyed reading this book once she got over the initial shock of the opening pages. It's a well crafted book and an easy read. It tells of the two main characters passionate opinions of reading in a world of Nazi dominance in World War II Germany.
Aug 10 - Liz Carlin led the Johnson City Newcomers Book Club discussion of Company of Liars by Karen Maitland. This was not an easy reading book. Rose enjoyed it because it reminded her of the Canterbury Tales.  Her favorite character was the Swan Boy as he reminded her of a fairy tale.

Thank you so much for your time and expertise, Mary.

February 9 - The Johnson City Newcomers Book Club discussed Jim Fergus' One Thousand White Women. The book club hostess, Anita Smythe, led a spirited discussion on the book's premise. It seems that since Native Americans are a matrilineal society, a suggestion was made they intermarry natives with white women as a way to integrate them into white society. It was a failed proposal. This book explores what might have happened.
