August 2011: Rose judged a chapbook contest for the South Dakota State Poetry Society (SDSPS). The contest Chair Rosemary Dunn Moeller mailed her 11 submissions of around 25 pages each. Rose was asked to pick the four best collections for their publication, "Four Quarters to a Section." The contest was only open to South Dakota residents, but the contest chair wanted someone with a South Dakota background. Rose found the experience challenging. She was not asked to rank the winners, but she wanted to know she fairly selected them. So, Rose devised a criteria sheet that not only graded each individual poem, but how they were presented in a collection. She thanks SDSPS for this opportunity to increase her judging experiences.
Rose and Rob visited Cherokee, NC and enjoyed touring the Village and watch the outdoor drama "Unto These Hills." Rose asked questions of the library research staff, the BIA office and the One Feather newspaper office.
